Your Excuses for NOT Making Tutorial Videos are Silly
A good tutorial video will make people think "WOW, she makes it look so easy!" Tutorials let people inside your process so they can appreciate how hard you work, how much time & money you've invested and how valuable your work/product/service is. This will help them trust you, respect your prices and feel excited to support your business and promote you to their friends.
TUTORIAL VIDEOS CAN...
- help people find you online and build your following of people who will become future clients.
- bring passive income through YouTube ads and sponsorship.
- be used as part of your educational programs or freebies that you offer clients/followers.
- build your reputation/credibility online as a trusty source & influencer.
WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?
Why are you hesitating or afraid of making tutorial videos?
- I'm not an expert. Who am I to teach?
Other people are better, but nobody is YOU. You have no idea how what you offer naturally can impact someone who is desperate to learn. It might seem small to you but it could be big for them. It's easy to lose perspective on how far you've come. Would the YOU of 1 or 2 years ago be able to learn something from the YOU of today? You'll always know more than somebody and less than somebody else. Focus on helping the people coming up behind you or educating people who are just curious about what you do or how you do it.
- I'm not good enough yet at my craft OR making videos.
NOW is the time. Start teaching and sharing now and give yourself permission to suck or stumble. Figure it out along the way and improve as you go. My best friend always reminds me that we need to take IMPERFECT ACTION. An imperfect project completed is better than a perfect project never started. Start rolling downhill and you'll build a whole collection of videos that evolve into a large body of work that will bring you followers and build you credibility. You can always go back and remake videos you made in the beginning. A bad video is probably worse than NO video BUT an authentic simple video is definitely better than NO video. What counts as a bad video verses a simple video? Ask me. Send me your DIY video and I'll tell you if it's good enough for your marketing or if you should try again.
- What if people steal my ideas?
Classic fear but step back for a second. Think about how much time, energy and money you've invested in your project/business. Most people, are going to watch your video, think it's a cool idea but give up before dinner time when they realize how much hard work is required. One tutorial video watched will not be enough for them to take over your industry and steal your clients. They'll need to invest ALL the time and effort. If someone is serious about growing their own business and competing with you, they're going to have to do a lot more than just watch a tutorial video. PLUS...if you truly want to be the best, teaching is an important part of YOUR learning process. When you teach, it forces you to improve, refine, reassess how & why you do things. Every time you teach, you'll just get even better and someone else will have to work even harder to keep up. That's how I feel when I write these blog posts - it forces me to articulate my ideas and get REALLY clear on what my business does. After each vlog / blog post, I become more confident in what I'm doing and therefore I become a better salesperson for my own business.

HERE'S WHAT SUSAN HAS TO SAY:
WHY I WANTED A TUTORIAL VIDEO
“In the saturated market of social media it’s important now more than ever to stand out. What makes your work special is hard enough to explain in photos alone, especially with jewelry where it takes extensive training and hours to create one pair of earrings. I wanted to film a tutorial to show just how much love and labor goes into every piece of jewelry I make."
WHAT IT WAS LIKE FILMING MY TUTORIAL VIDEO
"Filming this tutorial was very quick and straight to the point. She knows exactly what shots to take and what I need to communicate better.
There were rarely double takes and the filming flowed effortlessly.”
WHO MY TUTORIAL IS FOR
"My plantain earrings process takes many steps and it’s NOT for the novice wire wrapping jeweler but my hope is it connects my viewers with the intricate craft of hand making jewelry.
It’s important that you don’t have to be jewelers to enjoy this tutorial, as it’s both captivating and visually stunning to watch."
